Incredible Australia became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals in the World Cup 2019 with a 64-run win against England at the Lord’s. England had beaten Australia 10 times in the last 11 ODIs. One of them was a  5-0 annihilation of the defending champions last year. However, when it really mattered the most Australia had the last laugh in a major World Cup game.

Australia confirmed their position in the semifinals by beating England

Most arguably the toughest test for England on their way to the semifinal was their yesterday’s match against Australia. Maybe it all started from their decision to bowl first. Australia gave them an achievable target of 286.  Aaron Finch‘s amazing century and his partnership with David Warner continued their form with yet another century partnership. These two batsmen actually built the base of their runs. All the others just carried out the voyage.

Jason Behrendorff and mitchell starc
Jason Behrendorff and Mitchell Starc are the main catalysts of Aussies victory.

When England came to bat, none of their star players managed to cut through the ball well. James Vince, Joe Root, and Eoin Morgan altogether scored only 12! So you can understand how devastating the Aussie bowlers were last day. Jason Behrendorff picked up 5 wickets by giving 44 runs and Mitchell Starc picked up 3 wickets sparing 45 in the powerplay. However, Ben Stokes kept his fight going on like in the previous games scoring 89 which wasn’t enough for the hosts. They were bowled out for 221 in 44.4 overs.

Now England will have to win at least one of the remaining matches. But they would like to win both just to make sure. That will take their final tally to 12 points. However, the last time England beat either of the two sides at the World Cup was the 1992 edition. A lot has changed since then. However, time will say everything. We have to just wait and watch.
