Sri Lanka‘s youngster Avishka Fernando really played a significant game and scored an amazing century versus West Windies in ICC World Cup 2019. Avishka’s extraordinary innings put his name on the history book. Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 23 runs and it seemed his hard work worked perfectly for his team.

Avishka Fernando registered his name in history book after becoming the youngest player to score a century in World Cup 2019

Avishka Fernando’s spectacular century versus West Indies registered his name in the history book. He becomes one of the youngest cricketers who scored a century in such a young age. Only Australian legendary batsman and captain Ricky Ponting is ahead of him. Avishka does the record at the age of in 21 years and 87 days while Ponting did it in 21 years and 76 days.

Avishka Fernando’s maiden ODI century made him Man of the Match Vs West Indies as well as one of the few youngsters list who scored a century in World Cup.

Avishka’s name is now put on the elite lists of young Centurians. He is sharing this record with the legends like Saleem Malik, Nathan Astle, AB De Villiers, Chris Gayle, etc. He is above them all too in terms of age.

Youngest in the World Cup to score a century for each team:

Sri Lanka AVISHKA FERNANDO 21Y, 88D
West Indies GAYLE 23Y, 164D
South Africa DE VILLIERS 23Y, 52D
Pakistan SALEEM MALIK 24Y, 52D
New Zealand ASTILE 24Y, 192D
India KOHLI 22Y, 106D
England ROOT 24Y, 61D
Bangladesh MAHMUDULLAH 29Y, 33D
Australia PONTING 21Y, 76D

The only person ahead of him is Australian legendary batsman Ricky Ponting. The most successful captain of the World Cup scored a century in his maiden World Cup at 1996 World Cup against West Indies in Jaipur. He was only 21 years old at that time and it was the beginning of a great journey of him.

Its almost 23 years later and Avishka does the same thing against same opponents in the World Cup although there’s a significant difference between the team of West Indies in 1996 and 2019. The Windies of 1996 was much more powerful than this team.

Can Avishka will follow the example of Ricky Ponting and become a great player and captain like him?! It’s too soon to predict but he can at least dream of that.

The current situation of Sri Lanka team is not that good and they’re passing such a dire time for past few years. Their World Cup campaign is also very disastrous. Avishka is only a ray of hope in this awful situation. If he can live up the hype and expectation, it will bring Lankan cricket a very good thing for sure.
