Sri Lanka already crashed out form the ICC World Cup 2019. They have endured a totally disastrous tournament. Although they won over West Indies in a stirring fashion, they have no chance to get through on World Cup’s next stage. Sri Lanka doesn’t have many things to get proud over this tournament. The only exception is Lasith Malinga and their another old horse Angelo Mathews who is currently leading the World Cup 2019’s bowling average chart.

Sri Lankan old horse Angelo Mathews leading the top place of World Cup 2019’s bowling average chart

Angelo Mathews, the former skipper of Sri Lanka, has been encountered very difficult times, came into bowling after a lengthy period, and taking a wicket in his first bowl. It was a dream start but and his team failed to carry on the positive vibe.

Angelo Mathews start to bowl after right months and showed magic and currently leading the World Cup 2019’s average bowling chart.

Angelo is now leading the World Cup 2019’s bowling average chart by toppling the likes of Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mohammad Shami, etc. He conceded the least number of runs he has conceded per wicket taken.

The CWC19 bowling average chart:

Position Player Team Avg
1 Angelo Mathews Sri Lanka 6.00
2 Steve Smith Australia 6.02
3 Mohammed Shami India 9.61
4 Vijay Shankar India 11.00
5 Mitchell Starc Australia 15.54

Angelo Mathews conceded only 6-runs in average on his per wicket while his other counterparts Australia’s Steve Smith’s and Mitchell Starc’s average is 6.02 and 15.54 respectively. Other toppers like Indian pacer Mohammad Shami’s average is 9.61 and his fellow teammate Vijay Shankar‘s average is 11.00 for per wicket.

Funny thing is, he didn’t bowl for the past eight months before this World Cup. He was also out from the squad and many people also doubted his fitness. But, he proved them wrong and kept his captain Dimuth Karunaratne‘s faith.

Mathew wasn’t advised to bowl by his doctors due to his hamstring injury but he took a big risk against West Indies even when West Indies batsman Nicholas Pooran was playing beautifully. He won against the odds and make his captain, teammates, and country proud. He is such an example to follow.

It’s true that this record of Mathews will not stay longer due to his other counterparts will get more match than him. But, it’s undeniable that such kinds of attitude and performance from senior players will definitely inspire the next generations.
